Bangladesh pace unit came up with a brilliant bowling display on Saturday to help them seal their first-ever ODI win against New Zealand at their home as they crushed the hosts by nine wickets to avoid a clean sweep in the third and final one-day international in Napier.
Bangladesh had lost their 18 previous away ODIs against the Blackcaps since their first attempt in 1990.
With Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Shoriful Islam, and Soumya Sarker picking up three wickets apiece, the visitors deposed the host for a meagre 98 in 31.4 overs, and in reply, they breezed past the target in 15.1 overs, losing only one batter.
This was the second time that the Bangladesh pacers picked up all 10 wickets in an ODI since their encounter against Ireland in March earlier this year.
Skipper Nazmul Hossain Shanto scored an unbeaten 42-ball 51, his eighth ODI fifty, while Anamul Haque chipped in with a 33-ball 37.
In their chase, the Tigers suffered a blow early when their opener, Soumya, who hit a sensational hundred in the second game, retired hurt on just 4, leaving the visitors at 15-0 in five overs.
Anamul and Shanto then combined for a quick-scoring 69 runs off 50 balls to put the Tigers near the consolation victory before the former was dismissed by William O’Rourke.
However, Shanto went on to bag another ODI fifty to take the Tigers home. The southpaw hit eight fours on the way to his fifty.
Earlier, opting to bowl first, young Sakib drew first blood as he got Rachin Ravindra to give a simple catch to Mushfiqur Rahim behind stumps for eight.
The 21-year-old, who bowled immaculately throughout his seven overs on the day, struck again to dismiss Henry Nicholls for one.
Will Young and Tom Latham then attempted to overcome the damage by playing sensible shots as they added 36 runs for the third wicket, but all that was undone when Shoriful joined the party to rattle the latter’s stumps on 21.
Shoriful then struck a double blow to remove Young on 26 and Mark Chapman for two to mount pressure on the Kiwis as they were shortened to 63-5.
From there, the Bangladesh pacers ensured that their dominance was visible on the scorecard as they picked up the remaining five wickets for just 35 runs to bundle them out for 98.
With this win, Bangladesh reduced their defeat margin to 2-1 before they head into the three-match Twenty20 international series, starting on December 26 at the same venue.
